Kundalini – This Moment of Awakening

There is a supreme power within you that is eternal, free and full of joy. This power is you and this power is God. Like the ocean flowing through a wave, this power flows through you as you. When you deeply open to this power, your life will be profoundly transformed in ways not possible for the “mego” to imagine. You will no longer be the person you once imagined yourself to be, nor will you be living in the same world you once lived in.

Most of us resist this power to one degree or another. When we open to it, it can be overwhelming, as it sweeps away the known and threatens the limits of our conventional consensus reality. We feel as if we are a wave disappearing into an ocean of bliss — and we are. But that which is disappearing is an illusion of false identification, the illusion of a wave separate from the ocean or an individual self separate from God and separate from Truth. What is disappearing is ultimately not real.

When my students ask how to awaken this incredible divine power, I ask them how they stop it from awakening, because much of what we do and think serves to repress this awakening and to maintain our status as a lemming charging along with the rest of the lemmings without ever considering what we are doing, or why.

In the traditions I was trained in, this power is known as Kundalini Shakti. Kundalini is simply the creative intelligence of God that dwells within each apparent individual. This supreme power allows each individual to recognize their true nature as being one with God, or Consciousness Itself. In Tantrik terminology, when Kundalini awakens from the dream of separation, the jiva (apparent individual self) recognizes that in fact it is Shiva (Supreme Awareness.) Jiva (the wave) and Shiva (the ocean) are not two.

The great Advaita Vedantin, Adi Shankara, was a devotee of Kundalini Shakti. How could he not be? He wrote the very beautiful Saundarya Lahari in Her honor. He called Her the eternal ocean of Beauty and Bliss.

Often, the path of Kundalini is delineated as a gradual path of ascension through levels of consciousness or chakras that sooner or later leads to full Awakening,  Enlightenment and Liberation. It seems to the time-based mind that there is the appearance of awakening through time, yet when awakening happens what is discovered has always been true. Since it is always true that we are one with God, then this recognition is immediate — and it is realized that this truth has always been present, free of time.

The awakening of Kundalini, the spiritual path and Enlightenment are all One and happen now. Now is always your point of power. When you are present now, the divine power of God known as Kundalini flows through you as you. When you are not present now, there is the avoidance of Truth and identification with that which is ultimately not true. This leads to suffering and deeper immersion in the dream of maya. Nothing is wrong with this. There is still only God.

It all depends on how you want to play the game.  The game is either finite or infinite. A hint: There are more possibilities in the infinite game and the only door to the infinite is right here, right now.

On this plane of reality, action is required. Yoga is Love in Action. Reality rewards loving action. The Yogic Pathways (Hatha, Raja, Karma, Bhakti, Jnana, etc) create a container through which this Supreme power and intelligence will manifest in every aspect of our life. As Sri Aurobindo said, “All life is Yoga.”

When you are present in what you do, a love, power and intelligence much greater than your own flows through you. It is the power of God. It is Kundalini. As Baba Muktananda said, ” God dwells within you as you.”

Great Doubt, Great Enlightenment

When we enter a spiritual system, we are usually given a whole bunch of things to believe and do. But if you want to wake up, then cultivating great doubt (the willingness to examine and deeply question everything) is of the utmost importance.

This willingness to examine and question everything rapidly exposes the unquestioned set of assumptions we have been living our life out of. This is a frightening and disturbing experience as the world, others and ourselves are not as we think they are. We rapidly realize we have been quite delusional. The world as we have known it falls apart.

It is at this time that the dark night of the soul, the desert experience, existential depression, nihilism, fatalism, angst  and atheism may arise because, having lost what we have thought is so, we have nothing to replace it with. Our philosophical mind will tell us it is all pointless as life is empty and meaningless. We may as well go jump off the bridge.

This half-bakked state of despair is precisely where one needs a good teacher. Most of those without a teacher often end up cynical, hopeless and depressed. For awakening to occur it must be fully realized  that the conceptual, intellectual, philosophical mind cannot think its way to liberation.

Another dimension of being must be called forth. This is Great Faith. Faith in this moment just as it is. This is where sitting quietly, doing nothing adds fire to the red hot iron ball of doubt cooking deep within our bellies. Resting as  effortless, choiceless, silent awareness.

And then suddenly something stops happening. The problem you are stops. In all directions there is only vast freedom, freedom from what you once imagined yourself to be and freedom to be what you always already are, freedom to allow life to be as it is. Something wonderful and inexpressible is happening.

Life is lived in wonder, delight, and astonishment.

The greater the doubt, the greater the enlightenment.
